6 of the Biggest Advantages of Electric Cars

GES Energy • January 5, 2023

Are you planning to get an electric car and are looking for a qualified company that can install an EV charging station at your home? GES Energy are electric vehicle charging station contractors that offer complete professional services for EV charging technologies in Australia.

Ever since they got registered as a transport option, electric cars and vehicles have changed the game of the automobile industry. With several various benefits we are hearing about them in the recent years, people are switching to electric vehicles because they provide cleaner energy and offer better performance. That is why, it is without a doubt, governments continue to support the use of electric cars.

In this article, let's find out why several car enthusiasts love them and what makes them stand out from the rest.

What is an Electric Car?

An electric car or an electric vehicle (EV as they call it) is a type of vehicle that is propelled by an electric motor which draws power from a battery that can be charged from various external sources.

Types of Electric Vehicles

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)

Battery Electric Vehicles, also commonly called as BEVs, are electric vehicles that operate solely using batteries. They are considered "zero emission vehicles" since they emit zero tailpipe emissions and they don't produce any of the greenhouse gases and toxic exhaust emissions that are released by gas powered cars.

The battery pack, which is charged using a solar panel or more commonly using an electricity grid, provides all the energy needed to power this type of electric vehicle.

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs)

Hybrid Electric Vehicles are mainly powered by engines and electric motors. They use a mechanism called Regenerative Braking that uses electric motors to slow down and stop a car to recover for energy loss.

Basically, fuel powers the engine, while batteries provide electricity for the motor. Both the engine and the electric motor turn the transmission at the same time where the wheels are then propelled by it.

Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)

Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicles are also powered by engines and electric motors. Just like other hybrid cars, they also use regenerative braking to recharge their batteries.

However, although they are similar in terms of using this mechanism, PHEVs considerably have bigger batteries than regular hybrids. And while regular hybrids can drive by a maximum of two miles, PHEVs can travel a maximum of 40 miles before the gas engines kick in.

A Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle use L2 chargers to recharge. However, not all of them can support fast charging.

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEVs)

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, also known as zero-emission vehicles, use a new innovation called "fuel cell technology" in producing electricity to power electric cars. Basically, the fuel's hydrogen-stored energy is instantly transformed into electric energy through the propulsion method used similarly by electric cars.

FCEVs are also more efficient in terms of energy security and efficiency since they don't produce any tailpipe emissions.

Advantages of Electric Vehicles

Fuel Cost Savings

Electric cars and vehicles only need electricity to operate, which means that you won't ever have to buy gasoline to drive. Since fuel costs have skyrocketed for some time now, it would be a great relief on your pockets if you will switch from a petrol car to a more fuel-efficient electric vehicle.

Save fuel costs

Additional price drops are on the way if you decide to start installing solar panels. Thus, we can really say, driving an electric car is a great way to save money. You can even receive incentives from government subsidies just because you decided to go green.

Safe for the Environment

One of the biggest advantage of electric vehicles is their environmental-friendly feature. Unlike most cars that contribute to the growing problem of air pollution, global warming, and climate change, electric cars are safe for the environment since they don't produce tailpipe emissions and greenhouse gas emissions.

renewable energy

Even if they use batteries containing lithium-ion, nickel, and cobalt that are toxic and may have a negative impact on our ecosystem and landfills, the amount of metals used are only limited to help reduce emissions.

Aside from batteries, electric cars also use renewable energy sources. As you know, renewable energy is obtained from natural resources like sunlight, wind, water currents, and geothermal energy, which is why, you can guarantee that they don't add up to the carbon footprint in our environment.

Low Maintenance

The typical gasoline powered car has hundreds of components, which must be replaced when they malfunction. On the other hand, an electric car has significantly less wear-and-tear components (an estimate of less than 20), making your maintenance expenses lower by almost 50%.

less maintenance

What's also interesting about using an electric vehicle is having to charge it in the comfort of your own home. No need to go outside and look for a petrol station because an ordinary electric socket or an electricity grid is enough to recharge your batteries.

Longer Battery Life

The battery of electric cars is a tried-and-tested technology that can survive for many years. In fact, EV producers and manufacturers guarantee that these batteries could last for a couple of years or also equivalent to 100,000 miles as warranted by Nissan and Tesla.

Reduced Noise Pollution

All electric vehicles are quieter than internal combustion engine vehicles. Since they don't need mechanical gears like those in conventional combustion engines, they are recognized for being extremely quiet.

Better Performance

In terms of performance and speed, Electric vehicles (EVs), can accelerate faster than any gasoline powered vehicle. This is because electric vehicles are less complicated than those powered by internal combustion engines.

Electric car drivers enjoy the overall performance of most electric cars because they are actually better than combustion engine vehicles in terms of torque, power and acceleration.
