Heat Pump Rebates

Australia offers a variety of rebates and incentives for households looking to install energy-efficient heat pump systems. These programs help homeowners reduce upfront costs, making the switch to a sustainable hot water solution more affordable.

Heat Pump Rebates State by State in Australia

Victoria

Victorian homeowners can receive rebates of up to $1,000 when upgrading to an eligible heat pump or solar hot water system. This rebate helps reduce the cost of installation and makes it easier to switch to a sustainable and cost-effective water heating solution. By replacing an older system, homeowners can cut energy use, lower bills, and reduce their carbon footprint.

To qualify for the rebate, you must:

  • Be the owner-occupier of an existing property where the system is being installed.
  • Have a household taxable income of less than $210,000 per year (combined for all owners).
  • Own a property valued at less than $3 million.
  • Ensure the hot water system being replaced is at least three years old.
  • Not have previously received a hot water or solar battery rebate under the Solar Homes Program for the same property.
  • If you have moved into a new home, you may still apply if the property has not previously received these rebates.

If your hot water system breaks down or becomes unsafe, you can replace it immediately without waiting for rebate approval. However, you must prove your eligibility as soon as possible after installation to receive the rebate. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria, you may not be reimbursed.

New South Wales

The NSW Energy Savings Scheme (ESS) offers financial incentives to households and businesses that upgrade to energy-efficient equipment and appliances, such as heat pumps. These incentives come in the form of Energy Savings Certificates (ESCs), which are generated based on the amount of energy a system is expected to save.

Typically, those upgrading their systems transfer the rights to create ESCs to an Accredited Certificate Provider (ACP) in exchange for a discount on the upfront cost of the new equipment. The number of certificates issued depends on the estimated energy savings achieved by the upgrade.

This scheme is exclusive to NSW and helps businesses and homeowners reduce both installation costs and ongoing energy expenses.

Australian Capital Territory

ActewAGL customers in the ACT can receive a $1,250 rebate on the purchase and installation of an energy-efficient electric heat pump, plus an additional $250 credit applied to their ActewAGL electricity bill over three years. This rebate makes switching to a more efficient and cost-effective hot water system more affordable while helping to reduce long-term energy costs.

How you save:

  • $1,250 rebate on the cost and installation of a new heat pump hot water system.
  • $250 total electricity bill credit, applied as $20.84 per quarter over three years.
  • Ongoing energy savings with a high-efficiency system designed to lower electricity consumption.

To be eligible, you must:

  • Live in the ACT.
  • Have an electricity plan with ActewAGL.
  • Be replacing an existing gas or electric hot water system.

Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme

The Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) offers financial incentives to homeowners and businesses that install eligible air source heat pumps or solar hot water systems. Through this program, Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) can be created based on the amount of renewable energy a system is expected to generate over its lifetime. These certificates can be sold or assigned to an approved agent in exchange for a discount on the purchase price of your heat pump system.

The SRES applies in the following states and territories:

  • Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
  • New South Wales (NSW)
  • Northern Territory (NT)
  • Queensland (QLD)
  • South Australia (SA)
  • Tasmania (TAS)
  • Victoria (VIC)
  • Western Australia (WA)

The number of STCs you receive depends on your location, the size of the system, and its expected energy output. This can reduce the upfront cost of a heat pump by up to 40%, which makes it an attractive option for homeowners looking to upgrade from traditional electric water heaters.

GES Energy has extensive knowledge of government rebate requirements and offers approved heat pump models that meet these standards. Our team ensures that the system you choose is compliant with capacity limits and listed on the Clean Energy Regulator’s register, so you can confidently access available incentives. With our professional installation and expert advice, we help you make the most of your investment in an energy-efficient hot water system.
